In September, 2014, Friends was awarded funds from the Federal Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention to create Step Up, a reentry mentoring project for young incarcerated fathers. Leveraging relationships formed with youth while they are in custody, Friends supports the successful transition of adolescent and young adult fathers leaving the Rikers Island jail complex and going home to communities in New York City. Through Step Up, Friends provides pre-release services to 100 young fathers while they are in custody, out of whom we engage 40 fathers post-release for at least one year. Through these efforts, we hope to minimize re-arrest and readmission rates among young fathers, minimize victimization and cycles of incarceration and increase positive developmental outcomes for young fathers and their children.
